Projector Installation in Garland, TX and DFW — 4K Laser and Ambient-Light Systems
A proper projector installation creates a cinematic experience that no TV can match — 120”+ screens, genuine black levels (on better projectors), and the sense of scale that only projection delivers. A bad projector installation produces a washed-out image, image geometry problems, and buyer’s remorse within three months.
The difference isn’t usually the projector. It’s the screen, the ambient light control, the calibration, and the mounting geometry. We’ve seen $15,000 projectors underperform in rooms where a $4,000 projector with proper setup would have looked better.
Projector Brands We Install in DFW
JVC NZ-series (NZ500, NZ700, NZ800, NZ900) — The reference-grade category. Black levels that actually matter for movie rooms. Native 4K panels. D-ILA technology. $8,000-$25,000 for the projector depending on model. For dedicated theater rooms in Camelot and premium custom homes, JVC is the default recommendation.
Sony VPL-XW series (XW5000, XW7000) — Native 4K SXRD. Excellent for mixed-use rooms with some ambient light. $6,000-$15,000 for the projector. Strong alternative to JVC for non-dedicated theater rooms.
Epson LS12000 — The value sweet spot. Laser light source (22,000 hours), true 4K via pixel-shift, HDR10+. Around $4,500 for the projector. 80% of our DFW projector installations use this — it delivers 85% of the flagship JVC experience at 30% of the price.
Formovie Theater and AWOL LTV-3500 — Short-throw laser projectors. Sit on a low cabinet 12-18 inches from the wall, throw a 100”-120” image without ceiling mounting. Great for rooms where ceiling mounting isn’t practical. $4,500-$6,500 projectors. Paired with an ambient-light-rejection screen, these work in rooms with normal lighting.
Budget tier we don’t recommend: sub-$1,500 “4K” projectors that are actually pixel-shift 1080p with aggressive sharpening. They look worse than a good 1080p native projector and set unrealistic expectations for what projection can deliver.
Projector Screens — Where Most Setups Go Wrong
The screen matters as much as the projector. Cheap screens with poor gain coatings make expensive projectors look washed out.
Stewart Filmscreen — The reference brand. StudioTek 100, StudioTek 130, Firehawk G5 (ambient light rejection). $2,500-$12,000 for typical residential sizes. For dedicated theater rooms, Stewart is what we install.
Screen Innovations — Strong second tier at lower pricing. Slate series for ambient-light rejection. Zero Edge Pure for dedicated rooms. Good build quality, shorter lead times than Stewart.
Elite Screens Aeon CLR — Budget ambient-light rejection. Works well for mid-tier installations. $800-$2,500.
Screens to avoid: $400 Amazon screens. The gain coating matters, and cheap screens lose 30-40% of projector light output compared to quality screens. You’re paying $5,000 for a projector then throwing away half its performance with a bad screen.
Ambient-Light Rejection Screens for Bright Rooms
Most DFW homes don’t have dedicated, blackout-capable theater rooms. Bonus rooms have windows. Living rooms have recessed lighting. Media rooms open to kitchens. In these spaces, ambient-light rejection (ALR) screens are the difference between a usable projector setup and a blurry mess.
How ALR screens work: specialized surface coatings that reflect projector light back to the viewer while rejecting light from other angles (room lighting, windows). Result: a projected image that looks great even with normal room lighting.
Typical ALR screen configurations:
- Short-throw ALR — For ultra-short-throw laser projectors (Formovie, AWOL). The screen coating is optimized for light coming from below (where the projector sits).
- Long-throw ALR — For ceiling-mounted projectors. Coating optimized for light from above and behind.
- Standard ALR — Works with both throw types, slightly less aggressive light rejection.
ALR screens cost more than standard screens — typically $1,500-$6,500 for residential sizes. Worth it for any room with ambient light.
4K Laser Projector Installation Service
Laser light sources are now the standard for serious home projectors. Benefits over traditional lamp projectors:
- 20,000-30,000 hour lifespan vs 3,000-5,000 hours for lamps. You’ll never replace the light source.
- Instant on/off — no warm-up or cool-down time
- Consistent brightness over time (lamps degrade within the first 500 hours)
- Better color — wider color gamut, more accurate HDR
- Lower heat output and quieter operation
All the projectors we install for home theater use are laser-based. Lamp projectors still exist but we don’t recommend them for new installations.

The Projector Installation Process
- Room assessment — Throw distance, ceiling height, screen wall, ambient light analysis, seating position, equipment location
- Projector selection — Matched to the specific room conditions and use case
- Screen selection — ALR vs standard, size, aspect ratio, fixed vs motorized
- Ceiling mount design — Proper structural mounting, cable management, HDMI routing
- Installation — Projector mounted, screen installed, cables routed through ceiling/wall
- Calibration — Geometry adjustment, color calibration, contrast/brightness tuning. For flagship projectors, full colorimeter-based calibration to reference standards

Projector Installation FAQs
How much does projector installation cost in Dallas? Entry-level projection setup including projector, screen, and installation: $4,500-$8,500. Premium dedicated theater: $15,000-$35,000. Reference-grade custom theater: $25,000+.
Do I need a dedicated theater room for a projector? No. Short-throw laser projectors paired with ambient-light-rejection screens work well in bonus rooms, living rooms, and media rooms with normal lighting. Dedicated theater rooms produce the best results but aren’t required.
What’s the difference between 4K and pixel-shift 4K? Native 4K (JVC D-ILA, Sony SXRD) has 8 million pixels on the imaging chip. Pixel-shift 4K (most Epson, DLP projectors) has fewer pixels but shifts them rapidly to simulate 4K resolution. Native 4K looks sharper, especially on text and fine detail. Pixel-shift looks good in motion content like movies but not as sharp as native.
How long do laser projectors last? 20,000-30,000 hours typical. At 5 hours per day viewing, that’s 10-15+ years before noticeable brightness degradation. Lamp projectors need lamp replacement ($200-$400) every 3,000-5,000 hours.
Can projectors compete with 98” TVs? For rooms with adequate ambient light control, projectors win on image size and cinematic feel starting around 110”-120”. For rooms with lots of ambient light, a 98” TV usually beats a projector unless you use ALR screens and proper setup.
Do I need professional calibration? For sub-$5,000 projectors, basic calibration is adequate and included in our installation. For premium projectors ($10,000+), colorimeter-based calibration is worth the $500-$1,000 add-on to actually achieve the picture quality you paid for.
